Organise knowledge like experts

Too much information at once overwhelms memory. Structure makes it manageable.

A big new topic can feel like a pile of unrelated facts. Working memory can hold only a few things at once, so unstructured material quickly overloads it. Experts cope by grouping information into meaningful chunks.

What the science says

Chunk it

Chess masters recall board positions by seeing familiar patterns, not single pieces (Chase & Simon, 1973). Grouping turns many items into a few.

Top-down first

Start with the big idea, then the key principles, then the details. Well-organised material reduces mental load (Sweller & Chandler, 1994).

Mind the limit

Working memory holds only a few items at once. Organising before memorising stops it overflowing.

Try this

  • ✓Before studying, write the big idea in one or two sentences.
  • ✓List 3–5 principles under it, then the details under each.
  • ✓Turn long lists into 3–5 labelled groups.
  • ✓Teach the structure to someone else.

In Saraswati Sadhana

Organisation is the focus of Days 13–18, with chunking and sequencing tasks in the daily tests.

A 6-week plan

Weeks 1–2A one-page outline before each new topic.
Weeks 3–4Find the chunks and draw a concept map.
Weeks 5–6Use your structures to solve new problems.
