Link ideas so they last

Isolated facts fade. Connected ideas stay. Build the links on purpose.

Songs and stories stick; lists and definitions don’t. The difference is connection. When new information is linked to what you already know — through meaning, images or place — it becomes much easier to recall.

What the science says

Ask “why?”

Explaining why a fact is true forces you to connect it with what you already know.

Use places and pictures

The memory palace — placing ideas along a familiar route — is one of the oldest memory techniques, used since classical times.

Sleep strengthens links

During sleep the brain replays and strengthens what you learned that day (Rasch & Born, 2013).

Try this

  • ✓After each topic, answer: Why is this true? What does it connect to?
  • ✓Place key ideas in rooms of your home and “walk” through them to revise.
  • ✓Connect subjects: how does this biology idea relate to chemistry?
  • ✓Revise before sleep, not only in the morning.
